Please make sure your private health fund (Gold Level Cover) will cover you for bariatric surgery.
Criteria for bariatric surgery from NIH 1991
For the Caucasian population, Medicare Australia will only approve bariatric surgery for patients with morbid obesity, a BMI>40
or BMI>35 with major medical problems (such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer)
The recommended age range is usually between 18 to 65 years. Younger females might wish to consider finishing their family first before having weight loss surgery.
New criteria from IFSO/ASMBS 2022
Bariatric surgery is recommended for patients with BMI >35 without medical co-morbidities
Bariatric surgery is recommended for patients with BMI >30 with Type 2 diabetes mellitus
Bariatric surgery can be considered for patients with BMI >30 who did not achieve substantial or durable weight loss or co-morbidities improvement using non operative methods
Bariatric surgery can be considered for patients who need a joint replacement
Patients in the older age group may be considered for surgery (no upper age group limit)
